Is the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro Worth the Hype?
I tried the viral 6-in-1 skincare device promising improved product absorption, radiance, elasticity, facial contouring, AND reduced pores—here’s what I found (a non-sponsored review).
As a skincare minimalist, I’m not the biggest fan of tools and devices that add a ton of extra time, effort, and $$$ to a skincare routine. Every time I see a new device promising “professional-level results at home,” my immediate reaction is unabashed skepticism, followed by “and, who has the time for that?”. Jade rollers, guasha, cleansing brushes, LED masks—I’ve tried them all, and none have convinced me they’re worth the time or effort needed for a permanent spot in my routine.
Enter the latest viral skincare device: the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro—a 6-in-1 device that promises skin tightening and brightening results that sound almost too good to be true. My inner skeptic was already rolling her eyes at its list of purported benefits. Still, curiosity got the better of me, and after spending way too much time watching before-and-after videos (including the now viral endorsement of Hailey Bieber), I convinced myself that this might finally be the one device to rule them all. And so, yes, despite my reservations I went out and splurged.
For (the better part of) 30 days, I put aside my skepticism and added the Age-R Booster Pro to my morning routine. I was determined to find out if this fancy little tool could live up to its promises—or if I’d just added another pricey gadget to my growing graveyard of unused skincare devices.
What is the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro?
The Age-R Booster Pro is the new “glass skin” guaranteeing device from K-beauty brand, Medicube. If you’ve been paying attention to the brand, you’ll know that this is the latest in their line of Age-R devices, each designed to provide professional skin care results at home. What sets the Booster Pro apart is that it has 4 different modes which combine many of the benefits of the other individual devices (a brave move, because investing in this one device eliminates the need to buy many of the others).
The device itself is extremely user-friendly and intuitive to use. It’s handheld, which is a major plus in my book. All you need to do is hold down the power button, choose your mode and intensity, and get started.
There are also a bunch of other smart little features—like the timer that tells you every time a minute has passed, or the skin contact sensor that activates the device only when it touches your skin—that show just how much thought went into the user experience design of this product. Bonus points for coming pre-charged AND with a long battery life (speaking as someone who’s had many devices die on her after using them on only half her face).
As with most devices, it does come with an app, but the controls on the device are so simple to use, that I’ve never actually bothered with the app.
How Does the Age-R Booster Pro Work?
Like many of the most popular skincare devices on the market, the Age-R Booster Pro also harnesses the power of LED light therapy, proven to treat skin concerns, such as acne and fine lines. What makes it unique, however, are the different types of electrical currents it uses to stimulate your face in each of the 4 modes.
Air Shot Mode
Air Shot Mode helps improve pore elasticity by creating micro holes on the skin. While that may sound a little scary (ok, a lot scary), I found the current in this mode to be fairly mild. It’s the only mode for which the device head isn’t pressed against your skin—it’s recommended to sweep the edge of the device across your face—so I was able to increase the intensity of the current without much sensitivity.
It’s also the only mode that’s meant to be used on dry skin, straight after cleansing, so it can be a little tricky to move smoothly. I ended up doing a kind of flicking motion across my face to get it to work.
Booster Mode
Every other mode from here on out is used after you apply your skincare products, making for a much smoother experience. The first post-skincare mode is the orange Booster Mode, designed to help your products absorb deeper into the skin. It also claims to help boost your skin’s radiance.
This mode is the easiest for me to use because the current is still fairly mild and the motion—simple circular motions across the face—is easy to do without a mirror (huge plus in the mornings when I’m in a rush). For that reason alone, this is one of my most used modes.
Micro Current Mode
Now, we’re bringing out the big guns. The green Micro Current Mode uses, you guessed it, microcurrents to volumize facial lines. I’ve tried a few at-home microcurrent devices and none pack quite the electrical punch that the Age-R Booster Pro does.
To use this mode, you simply glide the device across the contours of your face (similar to how you would move a guasha or facial massager), and let the current do the work. Make sure you have enough product on your face to help it move smoothly, a dry face can make the experience extremely uncomfortable.
Derma Shot Mode
Saving the best (or worst, depending on your tolerance) for last, we have the red Derma Shot Mode. This has got to be the most unique of the 4 modes, using Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) to stimulate facial muscles that have lost elasticity.
Even after several uses, the corners of my mouth and eyes twitch ever so slightly every time I use this mode—and that’s on the lowest intensity level. I go very, VERY slow with Derma Shot, moving the device like a massager, similar to the Micro Current Mode, but doing it deliberately and with a delicate touch.
My Review of the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro (not sponsored!)
Like I said above, I was immediately impressed with the design and usability of the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro. If I had one tiny pet peeve with the design, it was that the Air Shot Mode, which is meant to be used first, is last in the order of modes, so you have to go through the other 3 to get to it. Not a major issue, since I know Air Shot is meant to be used less than the other 3, just a minor inconvenience for me.
How I Used the Booster Pro in My Routine
While the device can be used day and night, I only used it in my morning routine because it can be sensitizing to use with retinoids (which are a part of my nighttime routine). This was another minor inconvenience because I tend to have less time to spend on skincare in the morning, so like to keep the morning ritual short and simple. This was what my routine looked like with the Booster Pro:
Start with a gentle gel cleanser I like to use the Haru Haru Wonder Black Rice Cleansing Gel or the Naturium Niacinamide Cleansing Gelee
Pat the skin completely dry and use the Air Shot Mode I did this a maximum of twice a week, 1-2 minutes on each side of the face (5 is recommended)
Follow up with a hydrating toner My all-time fave is the I’m From Rice Toner
And a nourishing serum My current obsession for hydrating, calming and brightening is the Beauty of Joseon Green Tea + Panthenol Calming Serum
Apply a thick layer of a gel moisturizer on one side of my face, and start using the remaining 3 modes in this order: Booster > Micro Current > Derma Shot While Medicube naturally recommends using this device with their own skincare products, I’ve loved using it with the Purito Oat-In Calming Gel Cream. I used the Booster Mode every day for 1-2 minutes on each side, and the Micro Current and Derma Shot modes on alternate days for a minute each (all the modes can be used 1-3 times daily for a maximum of 5 minutes each, the device automatically goes into standby mode after 5 minutes).
Repeat on the other side of my face
Finish off with sunscreen
At the minimum, this added 10-15 minutes to my routine every morning. This might not seem like a lot, by my routine without the Booster Pro takes about 5 minutes tops, so adding 10-15 minutes every morning is a considerable commitment.
My experience with the Booster Pro
I’ll admit I was a little nervous about the experience of this product. I’ve never been a fan of the “buzzing” feeling from microcurrent devices, and this one immediately stood out as being more powerful than others I’d tried before. I’ve stuck steadfastly to the lowest intensity setting, even after a month of use and don’t see myself upping that any time soon.
After my first use, I noticed an immediate glass skin effect, which I don’t get from skincare alone. I can’t say if this was because of the device or because of how much additional moisturizer I had to use in order for it to glide smoothly—but, it was definitely there.
What was more noticeable to me was the slightly lifted and tighter look of my face immediately post-use. You can see it in this image here—it’s not too dramatic, but I feel like my eye area looks more lifted and less droopy in the side that used the Booster Pro. My jawline’s also a wee bit more snatched (please tell me I’m not imagining that), and just overall, my face looks a bit less puffy.
Pros and Cons of the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro
Pros:
✅ Intuitive design makes it easy to use at home, and portable to carry around when you travel
✅ Immediate post-treatment glass skin glow and lifted effect
✅ Enhances product absorption, making serums work harder
✅ Multiple benefits in one device, stronger current than other
Cons:
❌ Requires a LOT of additional product to help the device glide smoothly (an unnecessarily large amount, in my opinion)
❌ Easily adds 10-15 minutes to your routine
❌ Requires consistency—don’t expect results if you’re not committed
❌ Is not recommended to be used alongside ingredients like retinoids and exfoliating acids, is potentially not suitable for those with sensitive skin
Final Verdict:
I have to admit, of all the at-home devices I’ve used to date, this has been the most impressive in terms of delivering immediate, visible results. However, after my first month of use, I couldn’t keep up the daily frequency of use needed to see long term results. It just added too much time to my morning routine, not to mention the number of bottles of moisturizer I was going through! I still do try and use it about twice a week, and I love the immediate post-use glow I get from it, but I can’t say I’ve been convinced to make it a staple in my routine.
Overall, if you’re someone who’s willing to dedicate the time and effort needed to use this device every day, the Medicube Age-R Booster Pro could be worth the investment. But, if you’re like me, and consistency is going to be an issue for you, then there are better places to spend your money.
